Saylor Wilson joined the Har-Ber swim team during her freshman year but had to sit out of competitions due to joining the team mid-year. For any athlete that is never an easy task but she worked with her club coach and created a plan for her to continue to train. That plan set her up for a great sophomore year. Early on in the season she qualified for state in multiple individual events. This was her first year in the 6A Conference and she showed she means business by finishing 2nd in the Conference for the 100 breast and also earning a spot on the podium in the same event at State is a huge achievement. Which earned her the title of "Newcomer of the Year". Each meet she wasn't chasing swimmers, swimmers were trying to out touch her at the wall. Scoring the most individual points for the team earned her the right to be named this years, "Most Valuable Wildcat". To continue on, Coach Nathan Whitten said this, "Her journey to being a top swimmer in the state hasn't been easy but it has allowed her to grow as a student-athlete and realize you can only control your own narrative. Where most people would have been defeated from these past two years she continued to hone in on her goals at the pool in which got her on the podium at state." Congratulations to Saylor and her awards!

For the 19-20 season, Sarah Pope has earned the award of 'Wildcat of the Year Award' for Swim & Dive. This recognizes the student-athlete who isn't necessarily the fastest in the water but the person who is all-around a great teammate both in and out of the water. Coach Nathan Whitten says, “This award is the most prestigious award in my book because someone on the team can earn it by their actions. Everyone is fair game to earning this recognition. There was a time early on in the season where I asked Sarah to help the team by competing in the 500 free. It’s a race where she normally doesn’t compete and doesn’t really train for. However, she gave me the nod to put her in. That was a moment where she really rose to the occasion and especially as a sophomore it spoke volumes to me and her teammates. Everyone knows you have to be a little crazy to swim that race because of the distance. Yet, she was willing to step out of her comfort zone and model what it means to be a team player. Another great thing about her is if you are able to attend a swim meet or a practice you can always find her mentoring her peers who are new to the sport without being asked to. She takes the initiative and that is an attribute of a leader, it’s why she is the Wildcat of the Year!” Stay tuned for more Har-Ber Swim & Dive Shout outs!

Giselle Cervantes and Raquel Washburn, two students at Har-Ber High School, have been selected as one of the top 10 national finalists in the 2020 Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge. For the past nine years, Discovery Education and Toyota have worked together to make teens aware of the dangers of distracted driving through the TeenDrive365 initiative. The TeenDrive365 Video Challenge encourages high school teens to develop an original video public service announcement that encourages their peers to stay safe behind the wheel.  Since its launch in 2011, the video challenge has engaged hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. As a finalist, Giselle and Raquel, are currently among the 10 students nationally vying for the $5,000 People’s Choice Prize. The public may cast their vote now through April 22nd.  We will also identify a first, second and third place prize – and Giselle and Raquel are still in the running for the $15,000 grand prize. All results will be announced in May.  For more information about the challenge, and to see Giselle and Raquel’s video entry, visit http://teendrive365inschool.com/vote. Go Har-Ber

To the Springdale Community, Student and staff health and safety is the number one concern of Springdale Public Schools. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Secretary of Education Johnny Key recommend school districts in counties without a presumptive case remain open in order to not disrupt community life, especially meal services for children and health services for all. The CDC guidance on COVID-19 is that short to medium duration school closings are not recommended. The major request is for good judgment be in place for hygiene for all students and staff along with social distancing. Springdale Public Schools will remain open. Homero Ruiz went a personal season best in the 50 free. David Wallace did a lot for the team. The Wildcat Swim & Dive Team opened up their competition season last night against Springdale High School and Siloam Springs High School. Both boys and girls team finished second behind SHS. Individually Har-Ber made a splash by winning multiple events. Emily Reaves and Anna Claire Marvin finished 1st and 2nd in the 200 free. Emily also finished 1st in the 100 fly just seconds away from qualifying for state. Speaking of state, David Wallace qualified for state in the 100 fly and nearly making the state cut in the 50 free. He did win both of those races. Saylor Wilson qualified for state in both of her events, the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 breast while winning both races. Sarah Pope won the 500 free by dropping 29 seconds from her previous time. Abigail Livingston won the 100 back while nearly qualifying for state in that event. Newcomer for Har-Ber, Max Tisher qualified for state in the 200 Individual Medley. He won that event along with finishing 1st in the 100 breast. The Wildcats have started the season off on the right foot by qualifying for state this early on in the season. They look to continue to ride that wave this Saturday at the Fayetteville Invite, 10:30am at the Jones Center.

We will have both Marshallese and Spanish intepreters. Please bring your laptop/Chromebook fully charged. Seniors and one parent must set up an account. Please make your FSA ID with the following directions before you come. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS DONE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE FAFSA AT THIS EVENT. WHAT IS THE FAFSA??? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be completed if you need financial aid to help you pay for college. The 2020-2021 FAFSA will be available Oct 1. It must be filled out at the official site, fafsa.gov. It will be easier to complete the FAFSA if you gather what you need ahead of time. Here is a short list of things to help. 1.Your FSA ID#. An FSA ID# is a username and password that you use to log into certain US Dept of Education websites. Each student AND one parent will need an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA process on fafsa.gov(https://fafsa.gov/) We recommend creating your FSA ID early-even before you're ready to complete the FAFSA form-to avoid delays. https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid EVEN IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS FIRST, PLEASE COME FOR HELP! It will go faster if you have done this, but don't let it stop you from attending. 2. Social security number. If you are not a US citizen but meet Federal Student Aid's basic eligibility requirements you'll also need your Alien Registration number. Here is a link to those requirements. https://studentaid.ed.gov/eligibility/basic-criteria 3. Your 2018 tax records. The FAFSA links parents tax returns to a student electronically if you submitted that way. But it is always best to bring the paper copies as well. If you did NOT submit taxes for 2018 electronically, please bring the paper copies. Representatives will be happy to help you! There is a short FAFSA video link on your student's Naviance homepage as well. PLEASE COME FOR! There will be people here to help you with any step of this.
